Mast Brothers Chocolate

I spied these beautifully wrapped Mast Brother Chocolate bars last weekend and as I looked further into the company I became even more smitten with the Brooklyn based brothers, Rick and Michael Mast, (gotta love their red hair and vintage style beards!) who pour their heart and soul into making these beautiful and delectable treats!

“Our chocolate isn't really a candy...It's more like caviar.” (Rick Mast)

“We originally just wrapped our chocolate in butcher paper, in hopes of doing anything we could to communicate the message that chocolate is food — not candy,” (Rick Mast as told to NYT Mag) “We soon realized that the packaging needed something more so we tried to retain the feel of butcher paper but with beautifully designed patterns.”

The spirit of craft is what drives the brothers and they have restored an old printing press so that they can print and design their wrappers in-house. Each flavor has it's own signature wrapper designed by one of the brothers or their family and friends.

If you are in the New York area you can watch the brothers in action - although the entire process takes 37 days (!!) so you may want to catch a quick preview and then hit the tasting room and sample the finished product

Wouldn't they make great favors or a decorative/edible element in a place setting? They really are too pretty to eat...Almost!

For an inside peek into the personalities of these quirky chocolate makers watch the video below - it is a gem!
