Artist Crush: Hayley Gaberlavage

While looking at new paintings by one of my favorite New Orleans artists, Amanda Talley, I stumbled upon Hayley Gaberlavage. I was immediately drawn to the humor in her art combined with the inspiration of her Southern roots.

Hayley studied Interior Design before receiving her Masters in Fine Arts at Savannah College of Art & Design. She now lives and works in New Orleans.

"In my paintings I contemporize the out-dated. With a sentiment for bygone attitudes and appearances, my acrylic on paper, canvas and panel paintings shimmy in two directions: towards the decorative, where I explore long-time infatuation with design, and in a sociological portraiture where innocence is equally dispersed amongst irreverent youth and the blue collar Americana of my Alabama roots." (Hayley Gaberlavage)

"My technique of evaporating background into swarthy brushstrokes allows time into the work, the acknowledgment of memory, which is imperfect, always unfinished, and congruous to the retro aesthetic and mood." (Hayley Gaberlavage)

Hayley and Amanda recently launched Transport Studio: a forum for collectors to obtain the works of featured artists at a discount for a limited time. They recently kicked things off with a 3-day sale, but look forward to more opportunities to purchase a beautiful piece in the future as Transport Studio grows.

Spring Staple: The White Bag

A bag to take you from day night...

I am sucker for any bag that can be slung cross body. The simple detailing, minimal hardware, and beautiful ivory leather make this Chloé bag a must-have!

Fancy Feet

I am officially over my love affair with boots. My feet have had enough! After months of hibernation I think they deserve some extra special shoes for their big debut this Spring...

Apartment Living: Joe Nye

I was thrilled to stumble upon an old House Beautiful feature of  interior designer Joe Nye's Los Angeles apartment. At only 900 square feet it is a true study in how to make the most of your space!  While it is obviously impeccably decorated it also exudes comfort and warmth and as Mr. Nye fully admits it is jam packed - no room is left lacking...

"I was worried about living in such a small place. But I found out it's freeing! I decided to practice the decorating philosophy that I preach to my clients: Live the way you live for 350 days a year. The other 15 are aberrations." (Joe Nye as told to House Beautiful).

"I love stuff. I want to come home to more. Being around a lot feels good to me."

"This is done to the nines. I recently contemplated doing my bedroom ceiling with raffia wallpaper, but my friends all told me to "Stop decorating!"

Spotlight on Coral

It was pointed out to me that I am a tad into turquoise. I admit there seems to be a magnetic force that pulls me to turquoise whether it's in jewelry, a beautiful lamp or my prized set of turquoise foo dogs! There are however other tones that I adore as well, one being: coral. I am a big fan of the pink and orange hues associated with coral. Not as girly as a pale pink and not as aggressive as a bright orange a great coral is the perfect pop whether in the pieces you wear or place in your home. (*Bonus - coral goes fabulously with turquoise!)

The Power of Advertising

I am not a Talbots girl nor have I ever been one or planned to, but after seeing these images from their new ad campaign featuring Julianne Moore my mental block dissipated slightly. While I think Julianne could wear a paper bag and still look great, the pieces she models in the campaign look promising. To Talbots or not to Talbots?

Take Me to Jamaica (with Ralph Lauren!)

This weather (now an ice storm, oy vey!) is forcing me to daydream about vacations to white sand beaches and endless amounts of sunshine. I think I have found my winter refuge in the Round Hill Hotel and Villas in Jamaica. Now if the prospect of a luxurious beachfront hotel in Jamaica is not enough reason for you to book a flight, here is a little more incentive for you - Ralph Lauren designed all of the villas. Yes, I thought that may be the little push we all needed!

Ralph Lauren designed "the overriding palette of the rooms in white to reflect the sand and light of Jamaica."

Aerial views of Round Hill Bay.

Views out from the hotel...

With an emphasis on comfort, this is the perfect place to escape from reality.

Ralph Lauren loves Jamaica so much that he has not only one, but two homes on Round Hill.
His "plantation home"...

And his "beach home" (just down the hill)...

Oh, to be Ralph. Where would you jaunt off to this winter?
